Roma Hooper worked in the disability field for many years as the assistant director for Contact a Family, a charity supporting families with disabled children. At the invitation of Feltham Young Offenders, she helped establish Radio Feltham in 1994, the UK’s first prison radio station. Roma has a Masters in Criminal Justice Policy from the LSE and she went on to become the first voluntary sector coordinator at HMYOI Feltham for two years until 2003. She received a commendation for her work at the 2006 Lord Longford awards for services to social justice and penal reform. In 2006 Roma set up the Prison Radio Association to expand prison radio skills training in the UK and establish a national prison radio station. She was appointed Chair of the Griffins Society in 2008, which works on behalf of female prisoners, and is Vice Chair of the Foundation Training Company which specialises in resettlement and reintegration of offenders. She co-produced the two Clinks national resource packs to support volunteering in prisons and the community and until recently was Director of Hooper Walker Community Interest Company.
In 2008, Roma set up Make Justice Work, a campaign to create a shift in the public's attitude towards the punishment and rehabilitation of offenders. We aim to shine a spotlight on our current penal system, discuss what works and what doesn’t. |
